Welcome to LocalCafe.org
We aim to provide web-based technical services and education for small, independent cafes and restaurants.
The focus is on enabling self-management of online presence with minimal cost and complexity.
Our Methods
We will achieve this through three primary means.
1. Our Marketplace: A Community-Powered Directory
This platform addresses the challenges of exsposure by putting community and locality at the forefront as the primary means to exposing you to your customers.
User's see whats closes to them first and foremost in way that focuses on the food and services they are looking for.
No funny maps - No Hyped up "featured/highest ranked" - Just a simple community drive marketing.
- Data Source & Philosophy: Built on OpenStreetMap, an open-source map of the world. This ensures the data is owned by the community, not a corporation, and avoids per-listing fees.
-
Core Functionality:
- A "Food Near Me" site that lists independent restaurants and cafes based on a user's location.
- Practical filters for customers: dine-in, takeout, delivery, dietary options, and current operating hours.
- A clear distinction promoting independent businesses over chain establishments.
-
Direct Business Control:
- Provides registered cafes with a simple dashboard to update their core information.
- These updates are pushed upstream to the main OpenStreetMap database, improving accuracy for all apps using OSM data.
-
Community Data Enhancement:
- Explores a system where customers can earn non-monetary rewards for verifying or adding new, unlisted independent locations to the map.
- This creates a community-driven mechanism to keep the directory comprehensive and up-to-date.
2. Our Software: Open-Source Tools for Every Need
We provide two tiers of software to meet different levels of technical comfort and business complexity. Both are free, open-source, and designed to be self-hosted or deployed on low-cost hosting.

2.b: The Full Website

Path Forward & Support Needed
To formally establish this as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and build the initial platforms, we require foundational support.
- Initial Funding Needs: Donations and sponsorships will cover legal fees, basic hosting, and potential stipends for student contributors.
- Community Engagement: We are seeking early-adopter cafes, volunteer developers, and general members to follow progress and help shape the project.
